TikTok, the popular social media platform, was recently hacked.

The incident was confirmed by TikTok as a significant security breach, compromising user data and platform integrity. The attacks took place on June 4, 2024.

Initial reports indicate that the attack was directed at high profile TikTok accounts which included accounts belonging to CNN, Paris Hilton and SONY. We cannot however confirm the extent of the breach.

As TikTok’s security team investigate and look at measures to secure the platform, it is important that users across the African continent secure their accounts as well. This basically means changing passwords and enabling two-factor authentication to enhance account security.

“Our security team is aware of a potential exploit targeting a number of brand and celebrity accounts. We have taken measures to stop this attack and prevent it from happening in the future. We’re working directly with affected account owners to restore access, if needed.” TikTok spokesperson Alex Haurek told Forbes.

Users should continuously monitor accounts for unusual activity

Cybersecurity experts stress the importance of regular software updates and user vigilance to mitigate risks. It is of great importance to continuously monitor accounts for any unusual activity as there is a growing concern in the rise of cyber-attacks on major platforms and the need for robust security measures.

This is not the first time TikTok has faced security issues. Previous incidents include data privacy concerns and allegations of mishandling user information. This latest breach adds to the on going debate about the platform’s security practices.

The hack of TikTok underscores the increasing frequency and sophistication of cyber-attacks targeting social media platforms. Users must remain vigilant and adopt best practices for online security to protect their personal information.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
