Prophet Dr. David Owuor, the charismatic Kenyan televangelist, has captivated national and international audiences as he leads a mega crusade in Nakuru City. His ministry, “Repentance and Holiness,” draws thousands of adherents, united by a message of strict biblical adherence and a return to traditional Christian values.

Before embracing his religious calling, Owuor had a promising career in science. He earned a doctorate in biochemistry and worked as a researcher and lecturer in the United States. However, in 2003, he left academia to pursue full-time ministry, a decision that has since reshaped his life and legacy.

Kimani Maina, one of Owuor’s early mentors, recounted to KNA how the prophet’s sermons emphasize repentance from sin, spiritual healing, and adherence to biblical teachings. Owuor’s large-scale crusades, often televised and streamed online, have attracted millions of followers who view him as a messenger of divine revelations.

A hallmark of his ministry is his urgent call for holiness and preparation for the imminent return of Jesus Christ. His sermons often stress the importance of tithing, prayer, fasting, and obedience to God’s commandments. In line with his teachings, many of his followers dress in white as a symbol of purity.

Owuor’s dramatic preaching style, combined with claims of miraculous healings and supernatural events during his crusades, has fueled his rise to prominence. Videos of his sermons, along with testimonies of supposed divine encounters, have proliferated on social media, amplifying his reach.

Beyond spiritual matters, Owuor has also delved into social issues, speaking out against corruption and environmental degradation—topics that resonate with many Kenyans. His influence in Nakuru City is particularly strong, with churches and tabernacles constructed in nearly every neighborhood to accommodate his followers.

Despite his widespread appeal, Owuor’s ministry has faced significant criticism. Skeptics question the authenticity of the reported miracles and raise concerns about his financial practices and the psychological impact of his teachings. Some argue that his calls for absolute devotion create dependency among followers.

Yet, even amid controversy, Prophet Owuor remains a dominant figure in Kenya’s religious landscape. His ability to inspire fervent devotion has made him a pivotal, albeit polarizing, force in the nation’s social and religious discourse.

As his crusade in Nakuru continues to draw massive crowds, the question remains: how will Prophet Owuor’s legacy shape Kenya’s future? His story is one of both reverence and critique—a testament to the complex role of faith in modern society.
