The Nakuru County Government has introduced a new initiative to digitize SACCO operations, targeting improved efficiency, transparency, and customer access. The program, supported by the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP), includes a two-day training for 40 SACCO officials drawn from sub-counties like Naivasha, Bahati, and Molo.
County Cooperatives Chief Officer Kibet Kurgat stated that digitization would reduce paperwork, lower costs, and provide members with instant access to services such as loans and transactions. The initiative is expected to attract younger, tech-savvy members and boost rural access to financial services.
County Cooperatives Director Josephine Ngandu highlighted the role of technology in enhancing SACCO competitiveness, stressing the importance of reimagining business models to meet evolving customer needs.
According to the SACCO Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA), Kenya’s over 22,000 registered SACCOs serve 15 million members and holds KSh 1 trillion in deposits and hold 30 percent of national savings, is undergoing legislative reviews via the Co-operative Bill 2024 and the SACCO Societies Amendment Bill 2024 to improve governance and deposit protection.
