Morocco to Host as CAF Increases Tournament Slots to 16 Teams

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Morocco from March 30 to April 19, 2025. This year’s tournament introduces a historic expansion—from 12 to 16 teams—giving more young African players the chance to shine on the international stage.

The tournament will kick off in Mohammedia, where hosts Morocco will face Uganda in the opening match. Other matches will be played across Casablanca and El Jadida. The stakes are higher than ever—the top 10 teams will qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar, a record number of slots for African teams.

This expansion is a major victory for African football development, offering more exposure to young talents who often struggle to get recognition on global platforms. The move aligns with CAF President Patrice Motsepe’s vision of making African football more competitive.

But will this expanded tournament translate to real investment in grassroots football across the continent? Many young players still lack access to quality training facilities, and without serious domestic investment, Africa’s potential will remain untapped.
